Wildfire Survivors

After the January 2025 L.A. wildfires, we mobilized quickly to create a community writing group for displaced survivors, one that could give voice to their pain and hope.

In April 2025, we hosted our first session at the Wende Museum in Culver City. And due to overwhelming demand, in 2026 we are expanding this work to meet the needs of communities across the city—Culver City and Playa Vista in the Westside, Altadena and Highland Park in the Eastside.

Testimonials

  • [This community writing group] was the first time I could put aside inventory lists and debris removal and begin to truly process what has happened—and to do that with a group of other wildfire survivors was powerful and hopeful.

  • Thank you for a restorative day.

  • I was afraid to come because I thought there would be so much sadness and intense feelings. I was surprised that we laughed and cried, and I am so grateful for the laughter.

  • While the going, and doing, post-fire has been nonstop (e.g., relocation, insurance, contractors, etc), having the opportunity to pause and reflect in this writing workshop has reminded me profoundly to tap into our essence as human BEings, not human DOings. Thank you for your community-minded hearts and acts of service.

  • Profoundly wonderful.
