Storytelling Salons

Storytelling Salons feature 10-minute stories with opening and closing musical acts in an intimate setting. Join us for an unforgettable night of stories, music and community.

In the past, we’ve raised $190,000 for other organizations helping underserved people in our community doing good work. We also offer community writing groups at no cost for under-served, under-represented populations, including seniors, former foster youth, mothers raising neurodivergent children, and wildfire survivors.

For more information on our 2026 Storytelling Salon, subscribe to our newsletter.

Writers, storytellers and songwriters come together to tell, read, sing and share stories–sometimes hilarious, often moving, frequently inspiring, always soulful–on a selected theme.

SUBMIT YOUR STORY

Defining moments, awakenings, epiphanies, and/or transitions on the theme of LOST & FOUND. Write about the discovery after the loss. We are interested in what you found–a new love, a new direction, a new perspective, a new skill, a new neighborhood, your confidence or anything else that came to you that you may not have anticipated. Our favorite stories have heart and humor and are just a little unexpected.

Stories must be no longer than 10 minutes when read aloud (five pages double-spaced) to be considered. Please submit your stories as PDFs.

2025 Storytelling Salon: Still Here

On November 1, 2025, storytellers and musicians gathered to share stories and songs on the theme “STILL HERE.” Stories of things lost—first poems and plays, beloved homes and communities—complemented stories of things found—silver penis bottle openers, the yellow star on a mother’s uniform decades ago, connection on a five month cross-country road trip. The gift of these stories will stay with us always.

Thanks to our amazing community, team, and partners, we raised $38,000 to support, sustain and scale our free Community Writing Workshops for under-resourced and under-represented Los Angelenos.

There’s still time to make an impact. Give the gift of storytelling by making a charitable gift to Saved by a Story.

STILL HERE Highlights

  • "Saved by a story lives up to its name. I stepped onto the stage nervous to read my story of friendship and loss. Seeing Kathy’s warm supportive smile and feeling the energy from the community gathered that night I began. The minute I opened my mouth I felt welcomed, excited, and heard. Reading my words out loud lifted me up and put me on the road to healing. Forever, I am grateful."

  • "I’ve been attending Saved by a Story salons since they first began and yet each time it surprises me that listening to people’s stories can be so powerful, funny, relatable and inspiring. The experience of hearing each storyteller approach the same theme from their own unique perspective is profound and moving. There is something exhilarating about listening to personal stories read out loud and it brings everyone at these events together as a community. And that’s why I keep coming back!"

  • "I always look forward to Saved By A Story - whether I’m attending as an audience member or a performer - it is one of my favorite nights of the year. Whenever Kathy asks me to perform my music at the event, it is a no-brainer immediate “Yes, count me in!”…simply because I love it so much! Saved By A Story is a night of storytelling and music, that raises money for a different wonderful charity every time. Kathy curates a night of stories that are both moving and funny, and always inspiring. There are incredible writers, both known and unknown, who share their work and their world, and who capture the feeling of what it means to be human. When I leave the event, I always feel reconnected to the age-old tradition of storytelling and I feel reconnected to humanity."
